August 2017

The Word of the Year is something awarded by numerous clickbait agencies as a linguistic snapshot of popular culture. There has been “fake news” and “fracking” and “Y2K,” neologisms with an immediately identifiable chronology. My favorite recent one was 2012’s “omnishambles.” I may not know exactly what that word means, but flailing my arms and running up and down the hall shouting, “Omnishambles! Omnishambles!” sounds like a good time to me. There’s definitely a lot of Zeitgeist in those few letters.

Another good one was “listicle,” a portmanteau describing the trendy way to write for mobile readers and other busy people. So, here’s your listicle of what’s going on with Arizona CPCU:

  • The Sedona Winefest is back! Oenology and underwriting can mix once again on Sunday, September 24. We’ll board a bus in Phoenix and head north for some samples, a commemorative glass, and a classic car show. This event has sold out quickly in the last two years, so look for the registration very soon.

  • The 2018 Board will soon be taking shape. All Chapter members are welcome for nomination, so please let the Nominating Committee or Jeremy Vick (jvick@copperpoint.com) know of your interest. We will have positions available on the Board itself, as well as various supporting committees. This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to get more involved with the Chapter or looking to enhance leadership and networking skills. You might also get preferred seating on the Winefest bus.

  • Our next luncheon will be Wednesday, September 27, with featured speaker Tiffaney Isaacson from the Phoenix Children’s Center for Family Health and Safety. Please note our new location: Hilton Scottsdale Resort, 6333 N Scottsdale Rd. A parking map is available on our website.

  • I-Day will be here soon! We have confirmed our speaker line-up and are planning a great event. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 14, and we will have registration open in September. If you know of any vendors interested in participating in our annual conference, please let me know.

  • The Society’s new Continuing Education program has started. It’s extremely easy to keep your name on the good kids’ list, so make sure to report your activities at http://ceforcpcu.theinstitutes.org or let us know if you have any questions.

Recognition, my favorite section:

  • Arizona CPCU hasn’t slowed a bit, as we are graduating 64 New Designees this year. They will be celebrated at I-Day and the Annual Meeting in Orlando, where we will host a reception for them on Monday evening.

  • Arizona CPCU hasn’t slowed a bit in its contributions to the community, as we have been able to support the Gamma Iota Sigma Chapter at ASU again this year, as well as sponsoring the 6th Annual Senior Awards Luncheon of the Diana Gregory Outreach Services Foundation. Many thanks to Board members Lamont Boyd and Sherry McFadden, respectively, for coordinating these efforts, and many thanks to our Chapter members. It is through your donations at luncheon registration and participation in events like our Golf Tournament that we are able to make contributions like these.

  • Relatedly, we are just a few days away from the Rick Jones, CPCU Memorial Scholarship Program beginning with Rio Salado College. Thank you to Board member Diane Scheidt for presenting the monies to the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation for supporting five students in insurance studies.

  • Finally, Candidate Student and Mentee Charley Ables has won the Diversity Engagement Video Contest from the CPCU Society Diversity Committee and has been awarded complimentary registration at the Annual Meeting, where her winning submission will be shown to all! We couldn’t be more proud of Charley!!

That’s all for now—a lot going on, and a lot to be proud of. Definitely reasons to be pleased and honored amid any omnishambles.

Brent: Thanks for your report. Looking forward to our meetings at the Hilton Scottsdale Resort & Villas and " I - Day " at the Embassy Suites. I would believe the Scottsdale Road locations to be more desirable than the hotel in Mesa. Joel Vonderscher
